Work With Us
Accountant
This role is suited to an accountant who takes pride in delivering accurate, high-quality work and exceptional client service. The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge and practical experience gained within an accountancy practice, take ownership of their responsibilities and work collaboratively with colleagues to meet client deadlines and maintain consistently high professional standards.
Accountancy practice is a technically demanding and client-focused environment where accuracy, sound judgement, organisation and clear communication are fundamental. We are looking for someone who can apply their knowledge confidently, identify and resolve issues, manage competing priorities and ensure work is completed efficiently, within agreed budgets and timescales.
Our ideal candidate will become an active contributor to the continued success of the department. Working alongside an experienced team, they will be encouraged to share knowledge, support the development of junior colleagues and contribute ideas that improve quality, efficiency and the client experience. Progress will be achieved collaboratively, with each team member contributing to shared objectives and the consistent delivery of a high-quality service.
The Role
Reporting to the Partners and Senior Management team, you will contribute to the delivery of accounts, tax and business compliance services for a varied client base, including limited companies, sole traders and partnerships. You will take responsibility for assigned work from initial preparation through to completion, maintaining clear communication with managers, colleagues and clients throughout.
- Prepare and review statutory accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships from a range of client records.
- Prepare corporation tax computations and returns, personal tax returns and associated compliance work.
- Plan and organise workloads effectively, working within agreed budgets and timescales and raising potential overruns or delays at an early stage.
- Identify accounting, tax or record-keeping issues, investigate them thoroughly and propose practical solutions for review.
- Liaise confidently with clients to obtain information, answer queries, explain technical matters clearly and keep them informed of progress.
- Build trusted and professional client relationships while identifying opportunities where the wider firm may be able to provide additional support.
- Maintain complete, accurate and well-documented working papers and ensure review points are cleared promptly.
- Coach, support and review the work of junior colleagues, providing constructive feedback and helping them develop their technical and professional skills.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across accounts, tax and other service lines to provide a coordinated service to clients.
- Keep technical knowledge current and apply changes in accounting standards, tax legislation and professional guidance appropriately.
- Use accounting technology and digital tools effectively, including cloud bookkeeping and accounts production software.
- Contribute ideas that improve workflows, strengthen consistency, reduce duplication and support the continued development of departmental procedures and processes.
About You
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- A recognised accountancy qualification, such as ICAS, ACCA or an equivalent qualification. Consideration will also be given to part-qualified or qualified-by-experience candidates with a strong and relevant track record in accountancy practice.
- Relevant experience within a general accountancy practice environment.
- Strong core technical skills in accounts preparation, corporation tax, personal tax and VAT compliance.
- The ability to prepare high-quality work with limited supervision and take ownership of assignments through to completion.
- Excellent attention to detail, professional judgement and a consistent commitment to accuracy and quality.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing assignments and meet strict deadlines.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of the importance of budgets, recoverability, efficiency and timely communication.
- A proactive approach, strong initiative and the confidence to raise issues early, suggest solutions and seek guidance where appropriate.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting and tax matters clearly to clients and colleagues.
- The ability to build positive working relationships and deliver a responsive, professional and client-focused service.
- A positive attitude, strong work ethic and genuine willingness to contribute to team objectives.
- The confidence and patience to coach junior colleagues, review their work and support their continued development.
- The ability to understand and embrace technology, adapt to new systems and identify practical opportunities to improve the efficiency and consistency of departmental processes.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word, together with experience of cloud accounting packages such as Xero. Knowledge of IRIS or similar accounts production and tax software would be advantageous but is not essential.
