With the easter holidays now coming to an end, those of us that took some time off will be getting back to work hopefully refreshed and ready to go after enjoying some well deserved time off.

Although being on holiday will give you a complete break from your screen, that doesn’t mean that you need to, or indeed should, be glued to it all the time when you are back at work.

Whilst there’s no getting away from screens nowadays, it can be good to take regular breaks from looking at them, and could actually make you more productive.

1)     By stepping away from your screen for a few minutes it can give you a chance to process what you’ve been working on and get more out of it than trying to absorb everything in one go and struggle to take it all in.

2)     By getting up and moving around it can help physically by avoiding you being inactive for long periods of time, and also mentally by allowing you to think of other things and ensure you don’t let other stuff fall behind by concentrating on one thing and then getting stressed.

3)     Taking a break can also sometimes allow you to approach something from a different angle and therefore complete it quickly rather than getting stuck in a rut.

4)     Even if you don’t physically get up from your screen, it can be helpful to look at something else in the room or outside the window for around 15 to 20 seconds just to give your eyes a rest, and give you a little thinking time.

Although it might take a little time to get used to doing any / all of the above, if you do it more often then it should hopefully become more routine and eventually 2nd nature and you should see the benefits both physically and also from a business point of view by getting through things more efficiently and quickly, with less stress.

So go on – try the above and hopefully ‘less is more’!
