Having studied Accountancy at university, was joining a firm of Chartered Accountants always the next step?
Yes, it always felt like the logical next step. I enjoyed studying Accountancy at uni, but I knew the next stage of my career would involve combining my theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
By joining a firm of Chartered Accountants, I knew I could strengthen my skills in both of these areas in a professional environment.
Why did you choose Drummond Laurie Chartered Accountants as a graduate trainee?
I was looking for a firm that would support my professional development, provide a variety of work and clients, and offer a positive working environment. I also wanted to be surrounded by experienced colleagues who are willing to help me learn and offer opportunities to take on more responsibility as my career develops.

As a business, Drummond Laurie is focused on building positive relationships. What’s been your experience of this as a graduate trainee?
The first thing I noticed was Drummond Laurie’s clear focus on people, both its employees and its clients. This was exactly the kind of company I was looking to work for. One that was focused on building strong and lasting relationships.
The application process felt personal from the outset, rather than transactional. I had become accustomed to completing virtual interviews with robots while applying for internships. After I applied to Drummond Laurie, I was offered an in-person interview, and for the first time, I felt as though I was being given a real opportunity to make a good impression.
Everyone I met throughout the interview process was friendly, welcoming and genuinely interested in getting to know me, which made accepting the job offer an easy decision to make.
What have been the highlights of your time with Drummond Laurie so far?
I’ve really enjoyed the chance to start earlier than originally planned. It has given me time to get to know everyone in the Drummond Laurie team and learn the processes and systems I will be using. It’s also been great to get to grips with full-time working before I start my Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) studies later this year.
I’m already a big fan of the company’s Sports & Social Club, which organises regular events and activities. And the new breakout area in the Grangemouth office is a great addition. A frame of pool or darts is always a nice way to unwind.
What’s on the horizon for the rest of this year at Drummond Laurie?
I’m looking forward to beginning my studies with ICAS. Having graduated from university, I am no stranger to workshops, tutorials and examinations. However, the challenge will be combining these with full-time work. But with the support of the Drummond Laurie team, I feel ready and prepared for that.
Any advice for graduates looking for their first role after university?
Even though I’m still relatively new at Drummond Laurie, I already feel part of the team. The people here are really what make the company so special, and I know that I will thoroughly enjoy my professional training and the graduate programme.
